A Soviet Chinchilla was shown out in Soviet Union in the middle of the last century at the Research institute of the fur breeding of animals for fur and rabbit breeding, at animal-breeding sovkhozes of the Saratov and Novosibirsk. For basis rabbit breeders took the rabbit of breed Chinchilla, which was shown out in 1910 in France and got the name from likeness with a chinchilla - shallow rodent with bluish-silvery fur from South America. Rabbits of breed a Chinchilla were usual crossed with white giants. Further the increases of living mass, precocity, the best adjusted to the climatic terms tried to get the method of selection. The reproductive crossing enabled to increase the productivity of Chinchilla. In 1963 a breed was finally confirmed.
Soviet Chinchilla is fine adjusted to the forage and climatic terms of different regions of our country. Among the typical for a Soviet Chinchilla signs of exterior there are: a small head, straight not short ears, extended compact trunk, strong skeleton, broad and deep chest, wide rounded croup, strong feet.
Living mass of adult rabbit is equal approximately 5 kg, separate individuals arrive at weight in 7 kg. Length of body averages a 60-65 cm, the circumference of breast about 37-42 cm. Young rabbits in two-month age have mass 1,7 kg, in three months they are 2,3-2,8 kg.
The doe-rabbit of Soviet Chinchilla differ in the high suckling productivity and good maternal quality. Fecundity of females averages 7-8 small rabbits for kindling.
Popularity to the breed Soviet Chinchilla brought not so much high meat quality, but wonderful fur which is brilliant, soft, of silvery-blue color, decorated on sides and back by windings black lines.
The hides of Soviet Chinchilla are valued for original coloring, sizes and good hairiness. They are used for making of fur wares in a natural kind or imitate valuable fur beasts.
